State-Dependent Pricing and Its Economic Implications

چکیده
In a packet-switched integrated-services network, the service provider can charge users a state-dependent price, which depends on the extent to which the network is congested. Alternatively, one can also charge users a long-term average price, which is set based on expected demand and capacity availability derived from prior experience at that time-of-day, but independent of instantaneous network conditions. In this paper, we study the economic implications of both statedependent and long-term average pricing. Using dynamic programming and computer simulations, we compare benefits that the service provider, society, and consumers can derive under different pricing schemes. Our results suggest that adopting state-dependent pricing improves both profit to the service provider and total benefits to the society. Those improvements are achieved for two reasons. First, state-dependent pricing functions as a traffic management mechanism that leads to a better packet throughput. Second, because under state-dependent pricing, a higher price is charged during the congested periods, limited capacity can be used to send more valuable packets at those times. Meanwhile, the service provider can extract more wealth from each packet sent. While the first effect benefits the service provider, society, and consumers, the second effect can reduce consumer benefits. Therefore, consumers may or may not benefit, depending on which of these two effects is more significant. We demonstrate that with smaller buffer size or inelastic demand, the second effect is more likely to dominate the first, which will result in a lower consumer benefit. 1 The authors gratefully acknowledge Brendan Dunham for his hard work in coding simulation programs, and Professor Marvin Sirbu for his helpful comments. Impacts of government interventions on pricing policies of the dual-channel supply chain by considering retailer services
In this study, the implications of the government’s tariffs on optimal pricing decisions in a dual-channel SC with one manufacturer and one retailer by taking into account the retailer services are examined. First, the best response strategies of retailer and manufacturer have obtained following the government’s tariffs by using a Stackelberg game model. Then, the government problem has modeled...

Abstract This paper presents a two-country DSGE model with state-dependent pricing as in Dotsey, King, and Wolman (1999) in which firms price-discriminate across countries by setting prices in local currency. In this model, a domestic monetary expansion has greater spillover effects to foreign prices and foreign economic activity than an otherwise identical model with time-dependent pricing. In...
متن کاملIrrigation Water Pricing in Iran: The Gap between Theory and Practice
Pricing policies play an important role in water demand management and its optimal allocation. Determining proper water price leads to optimal allocation of water especially in agricultural consumptions. Applying new subsidy targeting law in Iran which insists on pricing water based on its supply cost, will effects considerably on water resource management in agriculture sector. So, in this stu...

Given the strategic remarkable rank of pistachio in non-oil exports, inputs’ management in its production is so important. As the scarcest input in agricultural sector, water is considered to be among the most important inputs of pistachio production.Water inadequate supply and limate conditions increase water demand in pistachio growing areas. It is necessary to determine the real value or pri...
